Day Eight – North through the Redwoods

As we left Monterey today we had a special reason to celebrate – Nancy’s 10 year anniversary since her diagnosis!   It was overcast but no fog as we hurtled north on the freeway towards Santa Cruz Harley-Davidson, always a popular stop on our itinerary.

Santa Cruz put on their usual fantastic welcome and lunch, and gave all the girls some fantastic shirts.  Last year one of our riders succumbed to temptation at this dealer and rode away on her very own Harley-Davidson Night Rod.

Nancy walked in the dealer and fell in love with a beautiful blue custom Sportster with more chrome accessories than we knew existed in the Harley-Davidson catalogue.  Within two hours the deal was done, and although the bike wasn’t ready to ride away on the spot, she organized to go back the next morning to pick it up so she can continue this adventure on her very own Harley-Davidson!

Rhonda Witharm, our super sweep from our first two US rides came out visit us and ride as a second sweep van.  She was due to ride with us again this year but an accident put her out of commission.  It was fantastic to see her again and have her ride along, even if on 4 wheels!

Next it was north to Redwood City, riding along the beautiful Hwy 9 with 50 miles of twists and turns through ancient Redwood forests.  The weather was beautiful and the road fantastic.  Tia and Gig saw a mountain lion up on Skyline Blvd slinking away from the road through the undergrowth.

This group rides like a well oiled machine and watching the bikes snake along the road cornering at speed without needing to brake was a beautiful site.

The first group liked the road so much they headed left instead of right on to La Honda Rd to Redwood.  The second group waited while Rhonda chased and caught them and led them back, but the road they were on was apparently the best of the day and no-one minded the extra miles!

We made it to Peninsula Harley-Davidson at Redwood City tired but exhilarated after our ride, and fitted in yet again a little more shopping before heading to our hotels for the night – the Westin and Sheraton at Palo Alto who generously donated all the rooms for our group for the night.

Family and friends joined us for dinner and we caught up on much needed necessities like laundry before turning in for the night.
