AHT Australia Day Seven – Northern Lights

The rain had started to clear this morning as we rolled down the main street of Byron Bay to the beach, where the local Dragon Boat team had generously put breakfast on for our group.

Meredith and Leanne ducked back down to Ballina to pick up her bike which had been left there overnight for some repairs to the electrical system.  The problem turned out to be persistent, so they rode back with Leanne on a brand new bike – a yellow 1200 Custom Sportster!  The perfect bike for the twisty roads ahead on the last two days of the ride.

Then we headed north on the highway through some beautiful high speed curves before exiting for Tweed Heads and driving along the river and around the cliffs for great views of Surfers Paradise and the long white beaches of Queensland.

Continuing along the Gold Coast Highway we hit Surfers just as they were closing roads for the Indy 500 causing complete traffic chaos.  We made it through to Morgan and Wacker, the Gold Coast Harley dealer where there was a huge reception waiting for us from local HOG members and riders, and family and friends of our own group.

After a quick lunch, it was north again on the freeway through Brisbane and to the northern suburb of Redcliffe.  The group formation on the freeway was awesome and we made it 2 hours of riding from the Gold Coast all the way to Redcliffe with only 2 lane changes (as we came on the freeway and then at the end on the Gateway Motorway) and without the group separated once.

Our motel for the night was right on the beach at Redcliffe and we gathered to head out to dinner looking at the lights of the Port Brisbane cross the bay.  Another day and now another state of Australia, and more fantastic roads ahead.

What an awesome site it was when you rode into the Gold Coast, seeing you in formation, headlights glowing and horns beeping. It was nice to be able to meet the girls. Enjoy the remainder of the ride and I am sure the time you have had together will help you as you take this experience back to your homes and loved ones. Special hello to Leanne. Love you Karen.
