Day Three - The Tonight Show
We had the complete L.A. experience today. Wow! We had an intentionally late start, leaving the hotel at noon. It was another perfect day. We rode along the Pacific Coast Highway past Santa Monica with stunning views of the ocean. We survived our first group gas stop and headed inland through the canyon.
It was a beautiful ride, with wide sweeping curves. We went through Pacific Palisades and Brentwood (of OJ Simpson fame). We went right through Beverly Hills, past Rodeo Drive. We had a view of the "Hollywood" sign as we rode through Hollywood and finally reached our destination at NBC Studios in Burbank.
Los Angeles lived up to it's traffic reputation as the last 10 miles were stop and go and incredibly hot. We were all roasting when we arrived at the studios. It took a few minutes to sort things out with security, but we eventually secured passes for our six lucky VIPs to The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
While the VIPs enjoyed snacks in the Green Room, made new friends, and prepared to see the show from row 5, the rest of us attempted to get stand by tickets. It was a long walk to Guest Services, then a long line to get a standby ticket, then the long walk back to the entrance. We waited 30 minutes before the started admitting people and another hour before we were at the front of the line - only to learn that there was only one seat left. Maria and Linnea flipped a coin and Maria won the last seat at the show.
While seven of our girls were now in the studio having an incredible time doing their best to get themselves and Amazon Heart on camera (I'm sure they will add their stories to the blog book before long), the rest of us made a run to the nearest Harley dealer to get transmission fluid for one of the bikes.
As Tia, Linnea and I were getting ready to go and waiting for the others to appear from the studio, we got a honk and a wave from Jay Leno himself.
It took us almost 2 hours to get back to the hotel in peak Friday night traffic, but everyone agreed it was worth it. We rode along Historic Route 66, and everyone rode beautifully as dusk faded and we found ourselves riding in the dark. Exhausted as we were when we got to the hotel, everyone got off the bikes with a big smile on their face and agreed that it was an awesome ride.
We had to wait 40 minutes for dinner at the Cheesecake Factory, and we were all a bit loopy by the time our dinners arrived at 10pm. But most perked up for a group viewing of The Tonight Show at 11:30 pm.
A special thank you to Tia Bruno who secured the VIP passes, talked our way past NBC security, mapped out the days route (brilliantly), and took on the role as primary group lead for the day. It was a fantastic ride, day, experience - thank you!
