Day Five - Spectacular, Spectacular!

After a well earned rest last night, we were up bright and early to tackle the next section of our journey. We rode inland from Lorne for a short detour to Erskine Falls - a dramatic 200 foot long waterfall that dives down through sub-tropical rainforest into a clear stream.

The view from the top was spectacular, and some of the group braved the 200 step climb down to the bottom of the falls - 5 minutes climb down, 30 minutes to get back up!

Then it was back on the road into Lorne and out on to the Great Ocean Road.

The sky was brilliant blue and the sun shone down on the incredible aqua coloured water as we wound our way along the cliff side and dived down to stretches of white sandy beach.

Despite it being a Saturday, we didn't have a single car in front of us and the road seemed to be our alone. Dimi, one of our new riders, earned her stripes today as Queen of the Road. She proved in our practice day at Calder Park that she had all the skill needed to ride a bike in any conditions, but was needing a bit of confidence in the curves to take them at full speed. After the first 5 minutes she was right on track and was greeted with a big cheer when we arrived into Apollo Bay.

The next section of the road took us into the Otway mountains, and those who thought they would be disappointed to leave the ocean, found this road even better - beautiful sweeping curves, through mountain forests and then suddenly finding ourselves burst out into deep green hidden valleys with farmland and cute cows!

We stopped at Lavers Hill for a coffee and to warm up - the sky may be blue but the temperatures are still cold, especially in the mountains!

Then it was back through more wonderful mountain scenery, before the road headed down back to the ocean, and long straight stretches. Before long we reached the turn off for the Twelve Apostles - one of the most dramatic sights on the Australian coastline.

We stopped in the car park and got off the bikes, to be mobbed by a group of overseas tourists desperate for a photo with us. Peri and the second van had disco music pumped up high - "Hot Stuff" blaring out, and we danced in the car park with the tourists joining in. We made them give us donations for the privilege!

The next track to start up was our theme song "I will survive" by Gloria Gaynor, and we danced and sang and celebrated our day.

Then we headed out on the track to walk to the cliff edge and enjoy the amazing view.

After a half hour break we got back on the bikes, and rode a short way into our final destination, Port Campbell. It is a beautiful little sleepy seaside village, with cute shops and motels. Our apartments had a wonderful view of the harbor, and the temperature had heated up to the high twenties.

We sat in the sun and soaked up the wonderful afternoon.

That night we cooked a barbeque outside one of our villas, and had a fantastic time looking at video and photos from the day. Mee Yee our guest from Malaysia has been a fantastic part of our group, and she made a special presentation to Amazon Heart from her organization, Breast Cancer Welfare Association.

The group made a special presentation to Mee Yee in recognition of her enthusiastic adoption of our rallying call "Oi!". For those who have been on previous Amazon Heart adventures, for the first time we have found someone who can out "Oi" Meredith. Mee Yee has been dubbed Meredith's "Mini Me" and is now in charge of gathering the group when we need to get going.

Already it has been an amazing trip - the most incredible scenery, empty roads, gorgeous weather and a wonderful group of women.

    Dear Donna and Shaz,
Hope the ride is going well. The locals at Snake valley asked how you were going on your ride. Looks like you are having a great time. You are both in our thoughts, all the best for a safe and fun ride. Look forward to hearing all about it when you return. Lots of love and kisses from Leesa and Marg.
