Day Seven - Wet, wet, wet!
After our big night out in Cape Bridgewater we awoke to overcast skies, and a magnificent cooked breakfast prepared by our host Denis! We definitely needed the hearty feast, as the grey skies began to lightly drizzle, and we rummaged around to find the wet weather gear we had all hoped not to use!
We set off up the road for 3 kms to see the blow holes and petrified forest, but the rain was starting to set in by then and the tide was out making them a less than spectacular sight. We took off again soon to start making our way towards our first gas stop of the day, Nelson.
Out the back of Cape Bridgewater we took a beautiful little winding road past the Bridgewater lakes, and through beautiful green fields, although the steadily increasing rain made visibility less than perfect. Then we popped back out on the Princes Hwy to make our way to Nelson.
The rain steadily increased but the roads were wide and pretty straight, so we made good time, despite occasionally taking a bath from semi-trailers heading in the other direction. We came through a patch of plantation pine trees, to see a group of 5 emus by the side of the road, bemusedly watching our progress. So far on the ride Mee Yee has seen a koala in a tree, kangaroos but she missed the emus through the fogged up windows!
At Nelson we filled up the bikes and warmed ourselves up over hot chocolate for a while - the rain was still fairly light, but at highway speeds chilled us to the bone. We reconsidered our planned scenic route around Mt Gambier, particularly after learning our planned lunch stop - McDonalds - was closed for construction works.
We decided that the famed blue lake would not be at its best in this weather, so cut about 40km off the day's ride and pelted straight along the highway to Mt Gambier, where we pulled in to fill the bikes again, and dry off while enjoying a gourmet lunch at Hungry Jacks ; )
Back on the road and the weather hadn't improved, but by the time we got close to Robe the rain let up and the temperature rose to make it more comfortable on the bikes. When we finally arrived, there was much enthusiasm for the heated pool and spa at the Robetown Motor Inn! Tired after the previous evening and the hard day's ride, some of the group opted for an early night and dinner in their rooms, while some walked down through the historic and beautiful town of Robe to the Caledonian Pub for a great meal in a wonderful setting.
