AHT UK - Day 1 - We gather in Oxford

Storm clouds may be gathering over the rest of the world, but today the sun shone on the women of Amazon Heart, incredible as that might seem for a British October…

The last few days have seen some disappointments, with a few of the girls being struck down with flu and even shingles, but today everything, came together.  Our Amazon sisters, from England, Scotland and the USA gathered in Oxford for the start of the UK ride-out.  There was great excitement as friends from previous rides met again, some after as long as 4 years, and new adventurers were introduced to the unique spirit that Megan and Meredith brought to these adventures.

Of course this excitement increased after the ride briefing when we were introduced to the bikes we’d  be borrowing – shiny new Harley-Davidson and Buell motorcycles.  After a short spin around the back lot, we were off with Oxford Chapter as escort and guide.  No time for practice rides on his short adventure so it was straight on the road with a 67 mile trip to our new home for the weekend.

Now every ride has it’s wrong turns, and this one is no exception – a shiny red van full of firemen split the group and distracted one of the riders resulting in a wee detour, but the system worked and no-one was left lost or alone.  With our guides' help we were soon back together on the A34, but trying to filter into some heavy traffic. At this point I’d like to say a particular thanks to the young woman in the little red car who went out of her way to try and side swipe one of riders, but quick thinking and skilful riding averted any problems and the group soon reformed.

The Oxford Chapter stayed with us as far as Faringdon where, I’m pleased to report, we sat outside in the medieval market square enjoying drinks in the sunshine – photographic proof will follow.

We ventured on without an escort and the girls rode and drove beautifully, staying together as a group the rest of the way to Gloucestershire.  Ali’s navigation was stunning, and we arrived in our new home without any further diversions.

The day was topped of with curry in some splendid surroundings and a clear, moonlit, starry evening.  Tomorrow we’re looking forward to being joined by some more Amazon sisters, and a great trip into Wales.
