Day Two - Castaways
The castaways from the hit TV series Lost never had it this
good.........
Today the weather cleared on the island - no more rain here, although we
could see showers on the mainland, and we knew from television reports
that the Gold Coast was still being hammered with wild winds and rain,
and ferries were still unable to run from the island to the mainland.
So, what to do when stranded on a sub-tropical island in the sun? The
group headed off on their own way to make the most of the unexpected day
off. Lying in the sun by the pool; massage and beauty salon
appointments; snorkeling; quad biking; walking along the beach and
exploring the island by 4WD.
10 of our group ended up with a bit more adventure than they had
planned. They took off from the resort at 1.30pm on a four hour, 4WD
tour of the northern side of the island, but at 4.30pm we received a
call to say their vehicle had become bogged in the sand on the beach on
the eastern side of the island and they were well and truly stuck.
The resort staff rallied around and sent out rescue vehicles, knowing
that while picking the group up was not going to be a difficult task, we
were all scheduled to feed wild dolphins that night, and the delay might
mean this group would miss out.
The dolphin feeding staff were fantastic, delaying their briefing and
the feeding as long as possible, and the dolphins were incredibly
patient. Finally our intrepid group of adventurers drove into the
resort, just in time to strip down and wade into the water to hand feed
the wild dolphins.
The wild weather of the last few days and king tides made dolphin
feeding an adventure sport in itself - the resort is on the calm side of
the island, so usually there are no waves, and you can wade in knee deep
to feed the dolphins.
Today there were high tides and waves, and both the dolphins and the
feeders found it challenging to keep your position in the deep water and
waves - but everyone who wanted to had the chance to have this amazing
experience, and some even went back to feed the dolphins more than once!
Then it was off to dry off and warm up, before dinner and an early night
- tomorrow we return to the mainland, pick up our bikes and head off on
our adventure! The huge storm system that flooded Brisbane is wreaking
havoc as it moves further south, with flooding in NSW now.
It looks like we will travel 2 - 3 days after the storm along the coast,
and so far we don't expect any delays!

Glad to see that everybody is handling all that is being thrown at you on this trip like troopers.

I have to say..inspite of the adverse weather conditions...I still wish I was with you all. Very very proud of the courage you are showing in riding those lovely machines through all sorts of conditions.
I've been keeping myself distracted by spending the weekend at Phillip Island, hooning about the Go Kart track with my Cherub. Grantville seemed quieter than usual as we drove through...must be because our Sista Sharon wasn't home huh?
love to you all!!!
